Wodonga Golf Club has announced a proposed redevelopment plan designed to secure the long-term future of golf on the site, renew ageing infrastructure and deliver broader community benefits for Wodonga and the wider Albury-Wodonga region.

Wodonga Golf Course has been part of the local community for many years, but the reality is that the traditional 18-hole operating model is no longer financially sustainable. The proposed redevelopment gives the course a practical pathway to keep golf alive, improve the quality of the course, and open the site to a wider range of community uses.

The proposal responds to the growing challenge of maintaining an 18-hole layout burdened by ageing infrastructure and increasing operating costs. Over recent decades, the facility has gone through multiple ownership changes, a history largely driven by these ongoing financial struggles. Due to the course's underutilization, the limited income generated is insufficient to cover the escalating costs of maintaining the extensive grounds, outdated irrigation system, and playing surfaces. Ultimately, the financial burden has simply become too high to absorb under the current model.

Without the change, the continuing decline of the course poses a risk to the long-term presence of golf in our community. To safeguard against eventually losing the course, the proposed redevelopment provides a practical pathway forward. The plan seeks to secure Wodonga's golfing future by creating a more sustainable, modern, and accessible golf facility, transforming the existing course into a high quality 9-hole layout supported by a new contemporary driving range that makes golf appealing to a wider community.

This redevelopment will unlock the necessary investment to breathe new life into the facility. Planned improvements include a full course upgrade, modern irrigation systems, restored bunkers, and enhanced playing surfaces alongside the new practice amenities. Bringing in these much-needed resources not only delivers a better golfing experience but guarantees the Club remains a thriving, self-sustaining hub for our current players and the wider community long into the future.

To make this vital improvement possible, around 133 residential lots are proposed on selected parts of the existing course, including the current 3rd, 4th, and 5th holes on the western side of the site, as well as land near the current 12th and 13th holes close to Parkers Road. The residential area would be supported by new path connections and publicly accessible open space around the housing. These green spaces will help preserve attractive outlooks for existing nearby homes while creating new landscaped areas and amenity spaces for the wider community to enjoy.

Under the proposed plan, the redesigned 9-hole course would be rebuilt to a higher standard, with alternative tee positions allowing golfers to enjoy either a shorter 9-hole game or an 18-hole-style experience across two different playing settings. This will provide flexibility for traditional golfers, busy locals, and players of all ages and skill levels.

Complementing the course is a new, modern driving range equipped with the latest ball-tracking technology and interactive interfaces. Designed as a weather-protected, highly accessible facility, it provides a fun way for anyone to learn, practise and enjoy golf, whether they are seasoned golfers, beginners, juniors, families, or social groups just wanting to have a go.

The driving range will also serve as a vibrant social destination where friends and families can relax with great food and beverage options. This reflects the changing nature of golf, where modern facilities act as hubs for social connection, entertainment, and community activity just as much as sport.

Finally, to ensure the entire site is welcoming and easy to navigate, the proposal includes new publicly accessible open spaces alongside improved concrete path networks. These additions will enhance local movement, safely connect nearby residents to the clubhouse and facilities, and integrate the Club more closely with the surrounding Wodonga community.

The Club believes the redevelopment can deliver benefits well beyond the golfing community, including:

• securing the future of golf in Wodonga;

• providing around 133 residential lots, new path connections and new publicly accessible open space;

• delivering a higher-quality 9-hole course with 18-hole round capability, modern irrigation and improved playing surfaces;

• creating a new all-weather, technology-enabled driving range;

• making golf more accessible to beginners, women, juniors, families and players of all ages and skill levels ;

• improving public access, open space and local path connections;

• supporting health, recreation, social connection and local economic activity;

• creating a more sustainable long-term operating model for the Club.
